2012-11-18 Bay Retriever takes first in a spinnaker race vs A and B boats

On a breezy, chilly Sunday afternoon, Bay Retriever started strong and never looked back, taking first in a competitive mixed fleet. With several of the regular crew unavailable, a guest crewmember remarked, "I've never seen anyone do so much work for such short amount of time," after we flew the spinnaker for maybe 5 minutes on a downwind leg - but that was enough to keep us ahead for a great finish to the 2012 racing season.

Bay Retriever Joins the B Fleet!

After learning all she could in the Non-spin fleet, the crew of Bay Retriever decided it was time to start playing with the spinnaker. Since Baltimore's racing fleet is mostly A or fast B boats, that meant racing against boats with PHRF ratings 100+ sec/mile faster.

Despite the handicap differences, we had a blast playing with the "big boys" and learning all the extra lines and roles involved with spinnaker - and managed to beat one or two over the line, and corrected over a few more. The longer courses do mean we finish after sunset, when the breeze dies, so we've got that extra handicap to deal with too, but we're still learning and having fun.

2012-08-05 Bay Retriever took 5th out of 15 boats in 2012 GovCup!

On a breezy night with a crew of 6, Bay Retriever beat down the Bay in 15 knot winds gusting to 20, then having a beautiful finish downwind under spinnaker. Total we sailed 100 miles, in 20:23:39, taking 5th in the 15 boat Cruiser class.

The new instruments worked well, the red cabin LED kept the interior lit while allowing crew to sleep, and the boat stood up to the pounding well. It was an exhausting, challenging weekend, but the boat performed well, and the crew did as well, while learning a lot more than you can in a Tuesday night race.

Our Course

2011-05-02 Bay Retriever came alive on a heavy air night

On a night with a shorthanded crew and 15-20 gusting to 25, we changed down to the #3, had a great start, and never looked back. Well, we did look back, but we never saw our competition close with us. From the light air race the first week to the moderate/heavy breeze of the second, Bay Retriever's been demonstrating her speed and holding her own against faster competition.

2010-10-18 On a wild and windy day, Bay Retriever held on for a podium finish

On a day with 20 sustained, and frequent long gusts to 30, Bay Retriever took to the line sporting a newly-reinforced deck and new turning blocks for the halyards on the starboard side of the mast.

With a 12 mile course, finishing in fluky, confused conditions of Baltimore's inner harbor, dodging water taxis, booze cruises, and a mega yacht, Bay Retriever performed well, and hung on for third in a race that only 9 other boats finished.
