2002-10-26 Bay Retriever completed her first race, a 14.2 mile upwind slog from Baltimore Light off the Magothy to the Inner Harbor. This was also the first time Bay Retriever flew her new 150 genoa. Although rigged for the first time to fly the spinnaker off the bow, the upwind nature of the race made that unnecessary. The boat performed admirably, sailing 24 miles in 5 hours, 41 minutes (19 minutes shy of the time limit). The committee boat had already published the finishes by the time we got to the party ;).2002-10-20 Entered BCYA Fall Series Pursuit Race. Having just received her PHRF rating of 207, Bay Retriever was definitely not the favorite boat given the light, fluky winds facing the fleet. Despite a rough start and her storm jib, we were approaching and overtaking her nearest competitor, a Dehler 39. Unfortunately, half the fleet dropped out when a freighter passed through the middle of the course. We dropped out when it became clear there was no chance of finishing within the two-hour time limit. Fortunately, no other boats finished either so the race was abandoned.2002-09-14 Entered in the Hospice-class for Hospice Cup XXI in Annapolis, MD. Cancelled when faced with 25 knot headwinds and 4-6' waves tightly packed on delivery to Annapolis.
